Modern Entertainment

I guess I will review modern entertainment.

I’ve been watching Conan’s new Tonight Show lately. I have always loved Conan, but towards the end of his Late Night run, I wasn’t watching as often as I once did. I guess I just didn’t care. But I tuned in for his last week, which was awesome and his first two weeks with the new show are also awesome. I love having Andy back, even though at least two of his attempts at having his own show were quite good and I would have lived him to still be there. Nonetheless Andy and Conan back together awakens my memories of watching Conan when I should have been sleeping for school and all that. Though Joel as announcer is missed just because he always seemed willing to do whatever they wanted him to do in a sketch. Not that Andy isn’t willing to debase himself for comedy. Ah well. And when I caught the fact that the Max Weinberg Seven was no longer called by that name, I thought maybe some of the band had left. Not so. They’ve simply added James Wormsworth, who used to just be a fill-in member of the Seven. Fine with me. All in all, it’s a lot like a familial group being back together and it feels right to me.

Then again, one of the things that got me to stop caring enough to find Conan online every day before is still there. In the monologue (and occasionally the sketches as well), I only get about half the pop culture references. I can’t be bothered to follow the careers of celebrities I don’t care about just to get jokes.

Also, this week I saw Drag Me To Hell, which was a quality horror with comedic vibe. I’ll end up buying that one, I would say. The writer or director or someone involved really seems to have an oral fixation, though, that is obvious.

2008 Ender

So the Dark Lord Char’Nagh has come and ended another year for us and we’re all a little older and a little wiser and a little littler thanks to his visit.

My posting irregularities prevented me from getting around to complaining about Christmas this year, but to be honest my heart wouldn’t have been in it. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m much happier ignoring Christmas than I would be complaining about it. At any rate I made it though all these holidays and now I don’t have to ignore them or complain about them for another year.

2008 was a good year for the PDR, especially in the sense that it was the year that he went from “Never having travelled anywhere” to “I’ve now eaten French Toast in three countries, in two hemispheres.” Let’s see if I can’t add some more travels to 2009.

So anyway, I have rung in the new calendar year with a viewing of both the Bill and Ted movies. I love those guys. I wish they were real. Ah well. Perhaps the future will bring them to me.

Station.

Happy Halloween Day!

Hey, guess what. It’s a little known holiday called Halloween. I love when that happens, even if I’m not doing anything to celebrate it this year, really.

Haiku!

The ghosts are coming.
You ask why. I will tell you:
I told them to come.

Of course, Halloween has its down side. All those kids who will end up sacrificing themselves to Satan. What a waste. They could have sacrificed themselves to me instead…

Though I work tonight, I think I’ll try to watch some Halloween-appropriate movies this weekend.

IMDB Is An Idiot.

Now don’t get me wrong, I find the Internet Movie Database extremely useful, as any Internet user is likely to. I mean sure, the comments on any given page are forty-five percent idiotic whining and forty-five percent shallow nitpicking, but I’m able to ignore all that and use it to learn about movies and stuff.

The reason I’m currently calling it an idiot is I’ve started to notice the “Plot Keywords” section. It’s probably always been there, but I only noticed it within the last couple months. At first glance it makes sense to have keywords that sum up significant things in the movie so someone who is looking for say, Viet Nam films is gonna be able to sift through them.

But look at some of the things that turn up in the Keywords! I’ll go to the Dark Knight page to get examples. There’s the ones that make sense, of course: “Vigilante”, “Dark Hero” and “Superhero” are all well and good. But then there’s the truly mundane: “Funeral”, “Gun”, “Bruise”, “Butler”, “Billiards” and “Applause” are all in there.. And we also have the truly inane: “Altered Version Of Studio Logo”, “Heavy Rubber”, “Number In Character’s Name”, “Title Spoken By Character ” and “Punched In The Face” leave me questioning the point altogether.

My main concern here is that these things rarely fit my definition of PLOT keywords. Seriously, if there is anyone who likes “Billiards” enough that they’re looking up movies about it, they’re going to be disappointed by the Dark Knight.

Also, there was a character with a number in his name?

Batman Has A Movie Out.

I had some Reese’s Pieces today that had Batman on the bag. They were all black, I guess to celebrate the superhero who is endorsing them. The Oh Henry I had was completely normal even though Batman was on that too. I feel ripped off. It could have been shaped like a Batarang or something. Freaking lazy Oh Henry.
